 WEEK 2

Hi Mike! This week, I have: (1) a collection of video clips that energize me / get me excited / inspired / in the mood to animate, (2) a collection of audio that does the same thing, (3) a small meditation on any potential commonalities / through lines among the previously mentioned media, and (4) some short, freeform char anim samples.

(1) VIDEO

0:44 - 3:48
Editing — reinvention of the chase scene, multiple conflicts intermingling aboard one large premise—love the high speed action feel—there’s stakes

whole thing
SPEED! There is a real sense of danger, MUSICAL SCORE, character’s relationship to space/circumstance

1:30 - 2:50
POWER—effective use of time remapping, cool use of choreographed dialogue against bg track

7:30 - 9:00, 10:30 - 11:10
Character and story informed by sound — reverse scoring — emotional journey through movement

0:00 - 0:10, whole thing
High energy editing, more inventive than strict cutting on down beats — strong sense of identity

0:30 - 0:48
stylistic and bold editing — minimal, smart

whole thing
Dancing as a polyrhythm — strong cuts on action

1:05 - 1:39
choreo + camera — really compelling physicality

2:26 - 3:06
Really compelling physicality + dance — is it time remapped to get that choppy? Too cool

(3) Some Thoughts

I’m noticing that I enjoy instrumental tracks with complex layering and sampling. Four-on-the-floor, 100+ bpm tempos with horns are also a plus. Intrigued by the ways digital sound production and classical instrumentation can work together elegantly while still packing a punch. Definitely enjoy inspiration from jazz, bossa nova, r+b, new jack swing, and hip hop/pop from the 90s.

I’m drawn to dances that are similarly punchy, that engage the whole body (particularly the hips), and those that bounce. Very interesting to think of polyrhythms as they apply to a single person, where perhaps one part of the body engages with one beat and another part of the body moves in a complementary, but different way. I like snap, precision, punch, and bounce. Love when story works in service of the song, rather than the other way around.

Looking for media that energizes and gives viewers a rush—not so much because of story stakes, but rather, by way of clever editing and the audio/visual integration. That being said, the work is always more engaging for me when characters are embedded in the space as people with fears and feelings, and not just lifeless puppets that dance with a downbeat.

(4) Loose Character Animation Samples

Next week, I’ll bring together a proposal / animatic for my first animation test.

Thank you!
