WEEK 14
Hi Mike!
We have: (1) a reworked animatic test with some slight camera work? Curious about your thoughts—tried to get characters to play with space more. I think I could heighten it further, but would also appreciate suggestions on how to cut this down (35 seconds is LONG!)
and (2): some character musings (tried messing around with them in different styles for fun)
(1) Animation Test 3 progress
(2) Character things
I also had a chance to meet with Justin Parpan over Zoom at 3:30p this past Friday! It was very helpful — thank you again for this connection.
To paraphrase his thoughts:
Anime-inspired is big for the TV scene right now; he mentions working with Fabian Mense on Victor and Valentino for Cartoon Network. Fabian is a poster child for the Gobelines “French - Anime” aesthetic that’s very big in 2d festival work coming from the school. The key is that his work references inspiration without directly copying them. Emphasis on incorporating my own spin on the media I draw inspiration from.
I should check out “Battle Kitty” on Netflix (just came out 1-ish week ago); big anime and video game inspiration. It seems like TV is a space for 2d animators to thrive nowadays. Cartoon Network!!
He feels like I’m in good shape. He sees a bit of Character Designer in my future, and just reminded me to push my own take on the stuff I am drawing from. Most of my inspiration is “trendy” now in the TV scene, considering most of the upcoming animators/directors my age are ALSO drawing from the same kind of content from the 90s and 00s (Turning Red).
I don’t want to rest on my laurels of course, but this is affirming to hear. Will continue to push the “me” that comes from these designs, and make sure that what I make is enough of a spectacle / show-off of my technical skills that people won’t even be worrying about the “anime” quality of it.
I will follow up after my pitch with Justin to get more specific portfolio feedback! Thank you again for the connection!
Thank you!
